Corona Virus - Ten Tors 2020 cancelled.
A statement from the Director Ten Tors, Colonel Neville Holmes MBE:
‘It is with regret that I announce that this year’s Ten Tors event will not go ahead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision has been made in line with current Government and clinical advice. I know that this will be a great disappointment to many however, given that safety is always our number one priority with Ten Tors, I hope it will not be a surprise. Although this year is the 60th Anniversary of Ten Tors, next year will now see the 60th event and so we look forward to celebrating this milestone with you all then. In the meantime, I would like to congratulate all those who have achieved so much whilst training for this year’s event and thank the hardworking teachers, leaders, parents and others who have enabled them to do so.’

What is Ten Tors?
Ten Tors Ten Tors is a challenge organised by the armed forces in which teams of six young people are required to walk either 35, 45 or 55 miles across Dartmoor. Teams must complete this challenge between 7.00am on the Saturday and 5.00pm on the Sunday. They must also carry all the equipment, food and tents they will need to survive the two days. Ten Tors has been taking place on Dartmoor every year since 1960. It is a test of teamwork, endurance, navigation and character. It is not a race, time is not important, the finishing as a complete team of six is. Beechen Cliff School has previously entered teams for this event and have been extremely successful in previous years with everyone completing!! No mean achievement!!! Three teams have been successfully applied for this year at the 35, 45, and 55 mile distances. Pupils of year 10 will have the opportunity to complete the 35 distance and students of year 11,12 and 13 at 45 and 55 miles respectively. Competition for a place in a team is always high. Priority will be given to those who attend all training sessions, and show themselves fit and able enough to cope with what is a demanding event. This is reflected by the tough training programme. Ten Tors is within the capabilities of most fit, determined and motivated individuals. Successful participants receive a medal (bronze, silver or gold) and a certificate. Employers and Universities are increasingly recognising the worth of this event for what it is says about a person’s character |

At this stage of the year through various outdoor activities many students will be in areas where they could pick up ticks. Due to the mild winter these minute spider like insects are in great abundance this year. They are parasitic and take blood from their host. They are normally easy to remove with tweezers and are quite common. However they can carry Lyme disease, which if untreated is extremely dehabilitating. The incidence of this disease is on the rise so here is some advice on what to look out for. Further details are available by following the links from the Outdoor Education section of the school website or directly from the link below. The rash is very distinctive and looks like a target or dart board. Please consult your doctor if you see this. Food advice!! Please take note. Especially on emergency rations.
